Stress vs My Skin

I haven’t posted anything in 4 months 😳

Ever since my last (really rushed and haphazardly prepared) post, I’ve completed a whole semester of uni and it’s been the most stressful 4 months of my life ever 😳😳😳Everyone who tells you that JC is the toughest academic period in your life is lying!!! I spent weeks on end studying till early morning in school, returning home the same time my grandma wakes up, but I can’t say that it hasn’t been great either – I’ve had a blast exploring new places, meeting new people, and trying new things. Usually after midnight.

‘Winter’ break now barely feels like break, but to me, milliefeuille is truly a welcome respite from finance. Skincare is one of the things that’s relaxing to me – as much as my mother tells me to ‘find a less shallow hobby’, I believe otherwise – I’m improving my skin (i.e. largest organ yo) and improving my health. (I’ve also recently started going to the gym! 2015’s been an adventure for me)

Actually my long-winded story really just means that I really haven’t had time to take care of my face… Piling on long hours with makeup on, sleeping at ungodly hours, and the intense exam/project-period stress, my face was a rough wreck by the time finals ended.

IMG_5671

Really, this is basically all that goes on my face now. I don’t get to try any of the fancy new serums, lotions, or sheet masks that I bought in the second half of this year, because it seems that this is all that my face can tolerate now 😦 L-R / T-B:

  1. Mizon AHA 8% Peeling Serum, 8% Glycolic acid. I purchased this a while ago from Venus Beauty for $10, as it expires in April 2016. I haven’t been using it consistently, but I’m hoping this’ll help to get rid of CCs.
  2. Differin, 0.1% Adapalene. My friend recommended this to me as we’re both struggling with similar facial issues, and I (conveniently) got this from the school clinic. While various people claim that it works really slowly/not at all for them, every time I use Differin + Stridex, my face becomes a painful, flakey mess. I guess it works!
  3. PAIR Acne Cream, Ibuprofen piconol. I got my first tube a few years ago, and it’s actually one of the top selling acne creams in Japan. I haven’t been using this as often, because I’m worried that layering acne treatments will make them conflict/less effective.
  4. La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5. I tried this out of desperation, actually – I remembered reading one of the r/AB threads talking about HG non-AB products, and how this cream was great for healing super dry skin. The first time I tried it, it stung my skin but somehow it worked – I’m down to my second sample tube, and I’m actually considering purchasing this. Any thoughts?
I also received samples of the Effaclar Duo+, which contains an AHA/BHA if I’m not wrong. Didn’t want that to overlap with other treatments, so I haven’t tried it yet!
  5. Stridex Maximum. This didn’t work magically in the first week I used it, but works magically together with Differin. I’ve been using this once a day (or else my skin flakes like hell), but it seems to really be getting rid of the clogged pores and CCs on my cheeks! My nose actually seems somewhat ‘cleaner’ 😮
  6. Dr. Jart Ceramidin Liquid. And of course, the best for last – my HG repair toner. No matter the condition of my skin, I’m always comfortable with smothering my face in this glorious liquid – maybe I just haven’t tried anything else with ceramides that this light and absorbent and hydrating, but this is one of the few products in my collection that I can use during a breakout, and is actually effective. Fyi though, when I first got it, it had this strange scent that I didn’t quite like, but I’ve come to find it soothing now.

Does anyone else have any HG products they use 1. during a breakout, 2. while clearing CCs, 3. with flakey, dry skin, 4. for fading PIH, and 5. as a HG cleanser? I really haven’t had this rough, uneven skin in years (plus the makeup I wear now!), so I totally hope this clears up soon! (by the looks of it, I’ll be glowing by January again 🙂 )

May 2015: Sheet Mask Empties!

Since the start of May, I’ve been trying to sheet mask every single day 8) It’s a truly lazy solution, but my skin is baby soft now!! Since sheet masking every day is fairly expensive, I’ve discovered that the remaining essence (mixed with some Hada Labo Lotion, if it’s not enough), is enough for me to put in a second dry sheet mask.

Innisfree why would you make such terrible dry sheet masks??? 0/10 would not recommend :()

April Faves

Let’s go! My top 5 April Favourites are: (in no particular order)

1. Kicho Pore Cleansing Brush
2. Curél Foaming Body Wash
3. Mizon Snail Repair Intensive Ampoule
4. VDL Beauty Metal Cushion Foundation EX
5. Shiseido Foundation Brush 131

1. Kicho Pore Cleansing Brush

IMG_5352

This pore brush technically isn’t a new buy, but I’ve only just started using it after deciding that I was too lazy to charge my Clarisonic Mia. I got this from Sasa late last year, and its finely-packed bristles are amazing for gentle cleansing. Paired with my Hada Labo foam cleanser, it makes sure that my face is always clean at the end of the day!

2. Curél Foaming Body Wash

IMG_5353

After we ran out of the usual body wash, we wanted to try something new – Curél, as you might already know, is a brand my family is pretty familiar with. While foaming face washes are typical, we’d never tried foaming body washes – and this is great! This is softly moisturizing and cleanses my skin gently. One issue is, it’s so gentle that it might not be strong enough for sweaty days out.

3. Mizon Snail Repair Intensive Ampoule
IMG_5350

An old purchase, but I’ve never noticed how effective this snail ampoule was until April. With my internship, I’ve barely had time to run through my full routine every night, so I’ve been experimenting with using 1-2 products per night to help combat the dry skin from the aircon >( After much experimenting, I discovered that this snail ampoule was the 1 product that made a huge difference when I woke up in the morning – paired with my Hada Labo Lotion, and Laneige Sleeping Pack, my face is baby soft when I wake up :’)

4. VDL Beauty Metal Cushion Foundation EX

IMG_5190

A new purchase!! This was part of my GMarket haul, which I will be uploading sometime soon 🙂 What caught my eye about this VDL Metal Cushion is its metal palette; I can mix the foundation with other products (including concealer and emulsions), and I can use a brush with this… which brings me to:

5. Shiseido Foundation Brush 131

IMG_5351

I’ve always been eyeing a brush like this; After I spotted the 1028 foundation brush in Watsons, I really wanted to get one (but somehow I never did). I decided to get the original, Japanese drugstore version off Carousell… and w o w is basically all I can say!??! This brush is the best applicator for liquid foundations I’ve tried (at the moment); it gives me this polished, natural finish that I’ve never been able to obtain, even with Rubycell puffs, the BeautyBlender, and the Zoeva Silk Finish brush. This… brush is absolutely golden, and I will likely be reviewing this separately one day.

Let me know if you’d like to find out more about any of my April Favourites! 🙂

“Haulidayin” – #2

While I was away at Grad Night, my most recent order finally arrived. I ordered some stuff off Qoo10 on 27th November, and both arrived on 2nd December – pretty fast, considering they came all the way from Seoul! My Testerkorea orders tend to take 2-3 weeks to arrive in Singapore – Qxpress is tons faster I must say.

I included my Asos swing earrings since Mary passed them to me during the sleepover. Pink faux pearl swing earrings!

1. Mizon 90% Toners (3 x 210ml for $15)

There was this great 1+1+1 deal for $15 on Qoo10, sold directly by Mizon themselves, and since I was in need of a toner I decided on this set. They’re actually ₩12,150.00 on Roseroseshop each – which would add up to around $45!! Mizon’s pricing schemes really confuse me, since their products are supposedly the cheapest on RRS… Anyway, thank goodness the toners were packaged in sealed plastic – the Bulg Rose toner leaked a little inside 😮

I’ve never tried these toners before, so I selected one of each:

  1. Witch Hazel, for ‘Pore Tightening’
  2. Camomile, for ‘Skin Soothing and Moisture’
  3. Bulg(arian) Rose, for ‘Deep Moisture and Sensitive’

From Mizon Korea

I was actually most excited for the Bulg Rose toner! I love anything remotely rose-scented – I think the only scented product I own is my rosewater spray. While they smell pretty good, I haven’t managed to try all of them yet, so I’ll post a review soon.

Mizon also packed in 2 free samples – No.1 Moist King’s Berry Mask Sheets! They actually retail for ₩2000 each.

2. Innisfree Soybean Energy Essence (3 x 50ml for $20)

I think this has been raved about more than enough online, so I won’t go into too much detail. This essence is usually compared to the SKII Facial Treatment Essence, and as such probably the Missha First Treatment Essence (I have a sample of this! I’ve yet to try it) as well. I’ll… also do a comparison of the 3 soon! Probably plus the Mizon dupe too.

My mum received a tiny 4ml sample (so cute!) of it a couple of months ago when we were shopping in the Innisfree flagship store in Ngee Ann City, and since she didn’t want it, I dumped some of it into my Missha Magic Cushion…. and then I realised I liked it. I slathered the remaining what, 1ml all over my face? and waited for results. Not sure what I expected with one use, but hey I liked it so I ordered more from Qoo10!

The essence cost me $20 for 50ml x 3, while it costs $53 for the same 150ml on innisfreeworld.com. I really love sample sized-items – they’re so much more portable, and I can keep most of the product fresh by keeping the rest away. I’d say there’s really little scent to it, as compared to many other heavily scented Innisfree products.

#Haulidayin – #1

Hello!

I guess I finally found the time to set up a blog – and I suppose this’ll be a place for me to pen down my thoughts on food and beauty i.e. lifestyle woo!

Etude House held 3 Princess Days Events a while ago – free shipping over USD$30, 15% off your order, and 50% off their famous I Need You sheet masks. This comes up to around $0.50 per piece. To be honest, previously I’d never even considered buying from Etude House because their image is just so girly. But a triple deal like this doesn’t come so often – who can pass up sheet masks?! Judith and Mary wanted some too, so we had to do some P&C to figure out how to get it under 1.7kg and over $30. I got 40 sheet masks – 2 of each!

So exciting!

I’m pretty sure this haul of sheet masks is gonna last me the entire of next year…

I also got a couple of other products to fill up the $30 – one Play 101 pencil in #29, a ‘creamy’ burgundy, and a Rosy Lip Tint in #7. I’ve come to really like both products 🙂

Swatch of the Play 101 pencil in #30. Immediately after it’s drawn on, you’re able to smudge it into a smokey eye – but wait any longer and this thing does. not. budge. No guarantees on oily lids though – with oily lids + the crazy humidity here, I’m actually not too sure whether this would last a full day out.

The sponge tip can be removed and washed easily. The top part of the swatch is blended – it gives a fairly sheer coverage on your lips.

This Rosy Lip tint colour is pretty much an MLBB colour – it’s slightly coral and great for everyday use if I’m out! I have dry lips, and it’s quite amazing how this doesn’t really accentuate the flakes on my lips.

Also, from RRS – the famous Snail Recovery Gel! My first impression of it:

The good:

  • I really like the consistency of this product, you don’t need a lot to spread over your face.
  • It dries quickly – for someone who doesn’t like the sticky feeling of gels/creams on your face, this is good.
  • Because it’s quick dry, it’s great as a makeup base. It locks your hydratants/nutrients in; if you don’t have time for a full skincare routine in the morning before rushing out, this keeps me hydrated enough under BB cream/foundation.
  • Inexpensive – about SGD$5 for one tube of 45ml!?
  • Not to mention this is always fairly fresh. I ordered this in November, and the production date was in October.
  • Fragrance-free – I don’t like my products to be heavily scented. This one, thankfully, smells of… nothing.
  • It’s in a squeeze tube!!! Not a jar!!! Keeps me from getting all those snails underneath my nails.

The not so good:

  • Because it dries so quickly, I’m not actually sure how much moisture it’s providing? The quick dry effect doesn’t leave my face feeling as hydrated after an hour as compared to the Hada Labo 3D Perfect Gel. Personal preference!
  • Is this a not so good? It’s 74% snails – I’m still fairly unfamiliar with this ingredient! I’m really interested in trying out snails (I’ve got more snailz on the way), and so far there haven’t been any negative effects on my skin. But if you’re icky about snails, this probably isn’t for you…
  • Is it as effective as some other creams? Maybe not. It does hydrate, but doesn’t cause me to wake up with a glowy face.
