Her World Beauty Club Beauty Bag

IMG_5279

As you guys may know, I signed up with Her World’s new Beauty Club a few months ago, when there was a pop-up store at ION in February. Everyone who signed up stood to win a Beauty Bag worth >$200, so when I received a letter in the mail from Her World, I was ecstatic!! It definitely made my day after getting home from work 🙂

What’s in the bag:

IMG_5282

  1. Fresh Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment, ~$20
  2. Bioré Marshmallow Whip Foaming Wash, $13.90
  3. Gatsby Oil Clear Sheet, $3.90
  4. Laneige BB Cushion (Pore Control), $59
  5. VDL Lumilayer Primer, ~$9.60
  6. Clio Kill Cover Pro Artist Liquid Concealer, $20.90
  7. Browhaus HD Mascara, $17.90
  8. Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum, $36
  9. Asience Intensive Treatment Oil, $14.90
  10. Bioderma Sensibio H2O, ~$10.80
  11. The Body Shop Body Butter, ~$7.80

…Which adds up to a grand total of…

$214.80!!!!

Whoa!! That’s a lot :O I really love how the Her World editors curated this bag – this is truly filled with well-designed products, and tailored for the Singapore weather. I’m saying this because I /have/ tried a number of these products (or similar ones) beforehand, and they really are great for me.

  • I’ve tried the Fresh lip balm before – tinted lip balms are the best here. Because the weather is so hot, my lips get chapped really easily, so some colour and balm together is the best for fixing up dry lips!
  • The Bioré face wash was actually my HG foaming wash for years, before I discovered Asian Beauty. It’s not that I don’t like it anymore, but just that I’ve started to try the Hada Labo one instead now!
  • The Laneige Pore Control cushion is mattifying, and does a great job at oil control in our humid weather 🙂
  • As you guys already know, I have the Clio pot concealer and love it! It’s really a pity that they chose #05 Sand to distribute in the beauty bags though – it’s WAAAAY too dark for me (it’s like, NC30?), so I won’t be able to keep this 😦
  • I actually have a bottle of the Innisfree Green Tea Seed Serum, and it really does live up to its hype – it does a very good job at hydrating my face, even with my leaning-to-dry skin! My only issue is that this line is quite… heavily scented.
  • Bioderma’s micellar cleansing water is, as I understand, fairly similar to the Bifesta one. Micellar water is much lighter on my skin as compared to typical oil-based makeup removers!

Thank you Her World Beauty Club team for the generous gift 🙂 You can sign up for the Beauty Club here: www.herworldplus.com/beautyclub

Beauty 101: Depotting and Airless Pump Bottles

AIRLESS PUMP BOTTLES!!!!!

IMG_5285

Today I’ll be talking about depotting my products into my favourite containers – airless pump bottles!!!! 😀 Okay, and also spray bottles. I like using pump bottles – in my opinion, they’re cleaner and easier to use.

IMG_5298N. O.

Like most girls, I like to keep my nails slightly longer so they look better when they’re painted. However, this means that it’s absolute hell trying to dip my fingers into jars of cream!! The cream gets all under my nails, and it’s just… plain gross.

You might retort, why not use a spatula instead? It’s clean and umm… you scoop stuff out of the jar. But I find this problematic – your spatula has to be clean anyway, and for it to be clean you have to wash it every time you use it 😦

That’s why I turned to using airless pump bottles!!

IMG_5299

Woohoo!! Look at how clean and simple the pump design is.

What makes airless pump bottles different from normal pump bottles (as seen in the centre above)? There’s no ‘straw’ to suck up the product from the bottom of the bottle, and it just gets sucked up as it’s a vacuum – the bottom of the bottle moves up as you use up more product.

IMG_5305

I’ve got 2 different sizes of airless pump bottles: pictured below is the smaller one!

IMG_5286

I first got these 10ml pump bottles from Taobao, and my uncle shipped it to his house in Shanghai, passing them to me over Chinese New Year. I got one to sample from Qoo10 (for $2.50!?!?!), while these cost less than $1 each – even with shipping!

As you can see, practically everything works in these bottles. Gels, Creams, Liquids – everything works! Okay, I don’t really recommend this for liquids – a bit messy heh. What these bottles are great for:

  • Depotting samples – I hate using foil sachets, but sometimes it’s the best way to figure out whether or not a product is suitable for my skin. These bottles fit 10 x 1ml sample sachets (the typical sample size!) perfectly!
  • Depotting creams from tubs – as explained above, I don’t have to dip my fingers into jars of cream.
  • Depotting remaining essences from sheet masks – I’ll explain this below.
  • Depotting product from larger containers – when you’re travelling, you really don’t want to carry so much. These are great, as they don’t leak, are within the flight restriction of 100ml, and are really lightweight.

IMG_5288

Soon after, I discovered that it proooobably wasn’t quite practical to use creams in such small bottles. I’d already purchased a larger, 15ml airless pump bottle from Sephora (I highly recommend against this – they’ve marked it up insanely). I got my uncle to send me another package of 20ml airless pump bottles from Taobao, at about $1.50 each!

IMG_530020ml, 15ml, and 10ml

What I like about these bottles is that they’re sleek, and I can easily control how much I’m using. The pump allows me to easily control how much comes out, and since it’s transparent, I can monitor when I need to refill the bottle. I picked 20ml as it’s the perfect capacity – jars of cream tend to come in around 40-100ml, so I don’t have to refill this too often, without carrying around a bulky bottle.

IMG_5292

You might wonder what all these strange products are… This…. is my toolkit for depotting! It’s not very easy to depot some products sometimes, as the pump bottles have a small mouth. For creams, I either use a spatula to scoop it into the bottles, or use a syringe to make a clean transfer. For liquidy-er things, I either use the dropper, or I pour it directly through a funnel.

The Sephora card and giap-giap thing…. I don’t know what it’s called I just use it to seal snacks. …Yes right they seem a little out of place! But it’s my old Sephora card, and these two are amazing for squeeeeeezing out every last drop of product in sample packets! Don’t ever waste any product in sample packets, when you have these two fantastic tools by your side 8) (yes, you can also cut your sample packet open and scrape it out. I don’t like that)

IMG_5290

Honorable mention for spray bottles – these are great for essences (like First Treatment Essences), and very, very thin toners – like the Hatomugi Skin Conditioner. I got the bottles below from Muji, as well as Daiso – I’ve found that the Muji ones are slightly better for misting your face. In the morning, when I’m reaaaally lazy to apply a full morning routine, I’ve taken to simply spraying my Secret Key Starting Treatment Essence over my face.

On a similar note, I’ve included how I store my sheet masks after 1 use – sheet masks typically contain 20-30ml of essence, and it’s always way too much for my face. I’m usually left with 5-10ml of liquid inside, and there are a few options for storage – I could pour the remaining essence into an airless pump bottle and use it over the next few days, or I could seal it. This is how I seal my sheet mask packets:

IMG_5308

With a flat iron!! I seal the top of the packet, and it’s basically airtight inside, ensuring that I can leave the essence to sit around for a week more or so. This is especially useful when I want to sheet mask-up again (i.e. drop a clean, plain sheet mask in to absorb the essence to use). While I’m at it, I’ve heard that some people re-use their sheet masks (YES, THE SAME PIECE OF COTTON), especially if they’re expensive. This is a big no-no – you’re basically re-introducing bacteria onto your face, negating any positive effects the essence might have on your skin.

IMG_5306

What it looks like after – nice and sealed!

I hope this post helped and enlightened any of you looking for alternative storage methods, especially if you’re travelling! 🙂

Confessions of a Beauty Blogger

Saw this on Dorkchops 🙂

1. How many hours a week do you spend planning/writing/uploading posts?

I plan my posts all the time – whenever I’m bored, I think of anything new I can blog about. As for the writing part, that’s the long bit – I take up to a few weeks to write/edit/photograph a post. I’m not the kind of person who likes to sit down and finish a post at one go, I tend to edit my posts over a period of a few days – not consecutively though. There are actually 3-4 posts in my drafts right now!

2. Are you a spender or a saver?

…Neither? Or both? I love saving money – I find as many discounts and coupons as I can to save on my hauls. I don’t do it to the extent that I’m breaking the manufacturer’s banks, but more like finding the best deals on the internet? Instead of buying things in Singapore stores, I find them online. Products shipped directly from Korea, for instance, are much cheaper (even with shipping). On the other hand, because of how much I save -> how much cheaper the products are, I tend to buy more products… Which equates spending more D: So I’d probably spend as much as any other beauty addict does on new products… But I get more products!

3. When is it easiest for you to write your posts?

In the afternoon! I’m not a morning person, so that’s completely out, but I tend to study at night. The afternoon tends to be this lazy time for me, and it’s when I feel the most relaxed and can type out a post easily. If you’re talking /when when/, it’s probably when I get new products and they turn out to be amaaazing (or really terrible!)

4. What makes writing posts comfortable for you?

When I’m really happy/upset with the product I’m reviewing. With all the emotions running in my head, I’m able to pen my thoughts down much more clearly, for some strange reason!

5. What’s your worst makeup/hair habit?

…I should probably wash my concealer brush more often. As for my hair, sometimes I’m too lazy to apply conditioner, so it gets really tangled!

6. What’s one quote you wish the world would live by?

I don’t really like basing ideas on quotes… But as much as possible I try to live my life on the principle of relative fairness.

7. How long do you spend getting ready everyday?

My daily makeup takes about 15-20 minutes, if I’m fast! The 2 longest portions of my makeup routine are usually applying CC cream, and applying eyeliner (ugh hate it when I mess up :(). If I’m just running out for a quick errand, it’s probably <5 minutes, since I’ll only apply sunscreen and concealer.

8. What’s your favourite post on your blog?

None yet!

9. Who is a beauty blogger that you think deserve more subscribers that they have?

Everyone I’ve encountered here on WordPress 🙂

10. What’s one thing you’re excited about in the coming year?

Definitely excited to start university in August! It’s a brand new era in my life, and there’re so many new things I’ve got to try.

11. What has been your favourite blogging moment?

At this point in time, probably the first time my blog hit >100 views a day! I shared a review of my DHC Eyelash Tonic on reddit’s r/AB for the first time, and it got 10x as many hits as the day before. Patiently working my way up to the day that I’ll get that many steady views a day!

12. How long does it take to prep for a post?

For a photo post with > 10 photos, it takes me about an hour to take the photos and to edit them. Writing the post definitely takes longer!

13. Are you wearing jeans/skirt right now or are you wearing pyjama bottoms?

I’m being lazy in home clothes! T-shirt and shorts woohoo

I’m tagging anyone who’s a beauty blogger and reading this! 🙂

What’s New: Quarter One, 2015

Exciting times! I’ve decided to do a collective haul post instead, covering what I’ve purchased and received in January, February, and March. Also, it’s my birthday today, so I’ve got quite a few things in the past few weeks 🙂

January: TesterKorea

Okay, this is the earliest haul of all – I purchased these in late January and only received them in February! There was an issue with the sourcing of the Laneige Cushion – I originally ordered the PushButton LE cushion (super super cute. doggy spots all over the case), but they were out – so they replaced it with the Anti-Aging version instead. *shrugs* Early anti-aging for me then! I’ve always loved TK’s customer service – they’re really friendly, and reply super quickly 🙂 (80% of my big hauls are made at TK!)

IMG_4701

Anyway, this is my first ever ~expensive~ TesterKorea haul!!! Previously I’d been purchasing small items, averaging out at 6,000KRW per item – but this time round I went big and got a few small, expensive purchases haha. The Banila Co. Clean It Zero, and the TonyMoly Rabbit Bars aren’t mine though! TK was especially generous with samples this time around (considering the delay in sending the package out even with EMS!).

IMG_4706

I ordered a bunch of Laneige, IOPE, and Clio items! After using my mum’s MAC pot concealer, I thought I should get one for myself too – so I picked the Clio Kill Cover concealer (it’s a little dark on me though.), but it’s a good deal for $14. I’ve found that this is fairly high coverage, which is great for those stubborn blemishes my Shiseido concealer can’t hide.

I also got the IOPE Air Cushion XP (N21) ($38) and Laneige BB Cushion (Anti-Aging) (#13) ($35), vs $50-60 RRP).

…As well as the CC Creams ($33 and $28 respectively, vs $45-60 RRP). At present, I’m more into CC Creams – so you’ll see a review of all my CC Creams soon! I have yet to open the BB Cushions, so that review will come in say, June.

TesterKorea /had/ the most amazing discounts (with 30% off everything), but they’ve recently reduced their discounted selection heh. Either way, if I’d purchased these products from local stores, it’s likely that I would’ve spent twice as much :O

Since I’ll be leaving my my teens soon, I thought that it might be a good time to start getting lipsticks… so I got a beautiful IOPE Color Fit Lipstick ($25, RRP $34) after much time spent deciding what colour to get. I chose an IOPE lipstick because a few shades went absolutely famous after Cheon Song Yi wore them in My Love From The Stars… BUT I made a mistake 😦 I got #29 Metallic Rose, and while it does look very pretty, it’s metallic. It’s got glitter in it. I like matte lip colours, so I’ll be selling this away too…

February: Tom Ford

I’ve also received some fantabulous samples from Tangs – between my mum and I!

IMG_4928

IMG_4930

Mum and I received one Tom Ford miniature Lip Color each – I chose Indian Rose, and she chose True Coral. These are way too beautiful to use…….. I’ve just taken them out occasionally to ogle (please don’t judge me omg)

March: Etude House

Yiyi kindly gifted me some Etude House products! I’ve not tried many of their products, so this is the time for me to see how effective their products are.

IMG_4909

IMG_4910

Moistfull Super Collagen CC Cream SPF33 PA++ – W13

IMG_4911

This color controlling cream contained with magic color capsules modifies and adjusts to your natural skin tone on contact, creating a vibrant and healthy looking complexion. CC cream with rich essence for a more moisturized and firm skin with 30% of super collagen.
3 in 1 smart all in one cream – whitening – sun protection SPF33 PA++ – anti wrinkle

What a huge bottle of CC Cream!

Precious Mineral BB Compact Bright Fit SPF30 PA+++ – N01

Just look at the packaging :’) so girly and princessy! The puff is mega soft as compared to the MAC puff, and there’s the Etude House logo embossed into the powder. I’ve heard that this BB Compact is not bad, so I’m definitely keeping this in my bag – imagine how cute it’d be to whip this out of my makeup pouch :>

Look At My Eyes Cafe – PK005

Smooth, Silky Eye shadow that supplies eyes with a profound, dramatic look.

SUCH a cute colour – I love how this is a basic shade that I can cover my entire lid with 🙂 Plus, this can double up as a cutsey blush colour in a pinch!

Pure Water Baobab Moist Cream

This is a highly moisturizing cream that daily absorbs Baobab’s pure moisture into skin for a clear and moist complexion, containing sufficiently moist Baobab Water and skin purifying Moringa seed extract. Like a burst of water drop, its light watery texture absorbs smoothly into skin with abundant moisture.

I saw this in-store with yiyi, and mentioned how cool Baobab trees are 😀 She definitely remembered it, and she got it for me because of that, and because…. of how much it looks like a baby food jar HAHAHA.

March: Carousell – Shiseido & Laneige

IMG_5134

Got a bunch of Shiseido and Laneige stuff off Carousell!

– High-concentration multiberry extract yogurt pack that nourishes skin from deep inside and leaves skin supple. Hydrates, nourishes and regenerates skin for supple and firming skin.
– Sogurty™, a specialized fermented yogurt, promotes collagen synthesis, and enhances defense ability of skin from harmful external causes to leave skin healthier and firmer. Its anti-inflammatory effects also soothes skin from skin troubles.
– Multiberry complex (various berry extracts from raspberries, blueberries, wolfberries, cranberries, and strawberries) delivers abundant nutrition and antioxidants to eliminate harmful free radicals.
– Exfoliation for smoother skin texture. NAG (N-acetyl-D-Glucosamine), one of the NMF(Natural Moisturizing Factor), and Niacinamide (a component of Vitamin B3) softens and clears micro size dead skin cells left after exfoliating for even denser and smoother skin texture.
– Richer plain yogurt texture: Fresh creamy texture of yogurt nourishes skin with soft touch.

Of all the things I got here, I was most excited about this Laneige Multiberry Yogurt Pack :> It smells absolutely divine – and no surprise here! The label says ‘DO NOT EAT’. This is probably going to be my second option for a night cream (instead of my Ettusais Premium Amino Caviar Cream) – I think I have an affinity for pink creams.

IMG_5145

And to be honest, these 4 were the main reasons why I got the Shiseido samples. L-R: Shiseido Ibuki serum, Lacquer Rouge, Perfect Rouge, and the Natural Finish Cream Concealer – the main reason! This is kinda my HG concealer – the one I’ve been using for >5 years haha. (Honestly, I think I’m going to sell away the Ibuki skincare kit :<)

March: Qoo10 – Wishtrend & 9Wishes

IMG_5085

I purchased the C20 Vitamin C serum from Wishtrend (via Qoo10) for my mum at SGD$12.99 (which is an amazing price by the way!!!), as I don’t think it’s very suitable for my skin – and Wishtrend was super generous by including a Klairs sheet mask, and a COSRX sample! Definitely surprising that Wishtrend treats Qoo10 customers similarly to their original site customers. I’ve been extremely excited to try Klairs and COSRX after finishing my current routine of products, so this is definitely a possibility, purchasing again from Wishtrend. (C’mon, they even threw in a 10% coupon – what’s there not to love about Wishtrend?)

IMG_5136

I also purchased the 9Wishes Vanishing Balm, because I saw preeeetty good reviews of it on Qoo10! This is my ???th CC Cream – and I have a love affair with CC Creams. You’ll see a comparison and swatches of this soon, in my upcoming post: Battle of the CC Creams! I got this for $19.90 for 50ml, which is definitely comparable (or just cheaper!) to the other CC Creams I’ve purchased so far.

Fun fun times 🙂 Gonna start work soon, so this is likely my last collective haul over the next 3 months! (More than enough new products for me to try (i.e. ogle) anyway woohoo)

First Look: Missha M Magic Cushion (2015)

Warning: This post is 90% pictures, 10% text!
I have tried to colour-correct most of the images to as close as real-life as possible.

This Missha M Magic Cushion has been a huuuuuuge deal in Korea for the past month. Why? This was priced at 4800KRW – but I purchased it for double the price (including shipping!) on TesterKorea haha. Buuuuuut this product is out of stock just about everywhere in Korea (and Singapore! it actually retails for SGD$24.90). This product does not come with refills, and the shade featured in this post is #21.

Adapted from Missha; I’ve done up a crude translation of the details to English! And moving on to the actual product.

The cushion case is fairly sturdy; I would say slightly less so than the Amore Pacific cushions though. Fits perfectly in the palm of my hand!

Slowly peeling the protective sticker off… Here’s the cushion itself!

Closeups of the cushion!

Comparison with Missha Magic Cushion (Empty) Case

IMG_5108

IMG_5111

As you can see, the empty case is slightly larger and fatter than the 2015 M Magic Cushion.

IMG_5116

IMG_5117

The newer product has a slight bezel where the cushion puff sits! Stylish design improvements I suppose?

IMG_5118

The new puff is however slightly smaller than the old one.

IMG_5120

IMG_5122

Closeups of the different cushions – I filled the empty cushion case on the left with the Missha UV Cushion Base, and mixed in some moisturizers.

IMG_5124

Unblended swatches of the 2 products: Top: Old #21 product, Bottom: New #21 Product

IMG_5125

Slightly blended swatches. My face is slightly tanner than the skin here, so I suppose this formula is alright – albeit a little orange.

IMG_5127

Blended swatches. As you can see this stuff sets pretty fast – it dried enough between shots that I had a bit of trouble blending it in! Definitely work quickly with this formula!

Hope this post helps 🙂 I think it’s definitely worth a shot, at the amazing price point. I will be making a comparison post with the IOPE, Laneige, as well as Hera cushions soon.

You can get the Missha M Magic Cushion at TesterKorea and BeautyNetKorea.

insiteTV: Sweet 20s Beauty Drama and Pony’s Beauty Diary + Other Favourites

Short post today! For some of you girls, I know makeup isn’t easy – so I’ll be starting a Beauty 101 Guides/Tutorials series soon 🙂 In the meantime, I just wanted to share a few YouTube channels/series that I really like. Before I got hooked down this path, I started watching makeup tutorials online and I found that videos were truly the most informative method for me to learn how to do makeup/skincare better!

Sweet 20s Beauty Drama

This series just debuted on insiteTV’s channel about a month ago, and I’m already hooked! It’s super cute – it focuses on Yoonha’s life (academic/romantic), and has special segments in each mini-episode where she does her makeup. Okay actually it’s kinduv just an advertorial for Innisfree’s cosmetics/skincare but I think the looks are gorgeous, and their products work great anyway! Either way, it’s mega cute if you like Korean Dramas! 🙂 I’ve linked the playlist below, but it’s not in order ok! Super super super cute I can’t wait for the next episode!! :>

EDIT: In case you’re interested, I’ve found the main cast on Instagram. Here is the cast list:
Bae Yoonha is played by Hwang Seung-Eon (황승언)
Kang Woo is played by Lee You Jin (이유진)
Tae-Jun is played by Shin Ji Hoon (신지훈)

Pony’s Beauty Diary

Probably every Asian Beauty fan’s favourite channel!! Pony is an amazing Korean makeup artist and she puts up extremely informative videos (on insiteTV) about both skincare and makeup application 🙂 She’s also recently started her very own channel, which you can find here. If you’re interested, you should definitely check out her attempt at transforming herself into the Black Widow/Scarlett Johansson – it was almost spot on!!! This is one of my favourite videos she’s posted – Rainy Day Makeup!

Get It Beauty

have to recommend Get It Beauty. Get It Beauty is one of Korea’s top beauty shows, recommending and reviewing the top products in various categories depending on the focus of the episode. They also have a segment called ‘Talking Mirror’ which I absolutely adore – it’s a mirror that interviews celebrities about their skincare/makeup/health routines!

2013/2014’s Get It Beauty Host was Yoo In Na, but they’ve since moved on to a new host for 2015, Lee Ha Nui.You can watch it on Soompi here, but you’ll have to use a VPN like Hola! Unblocker if you’re not in the USA. I’ve embedded a preview the Speedy Makeup episode from 2014 below:

Bonus: Meejmuse

My yiyi recommended her to me – she’s a Korean-Australian and she reviews both Asian and Western beauty products 🙂 Since I tend to prefer videos involving Asian products, I haven’t watched her entire ensemble – but you might enjoy the diversity in her reviewed products! Linked below is her top Korean products video.

Okay that’s all for today! I think that these videos will settle you for a long, long time – I haven’t even completed Get It Beauty, and Pony’s looooong history of videos took me months to finish! I hope these videos help you down your path of beauty 🙂

Review: DHC Eyelash Tonic

Today I’m going to be reviewing DHC’s Eyelash Tonic! I’ve always had short eyelashes throughout my life – they were never curly, long, or voluminous – they were just short and stuck straight out of my eyelids. Eek! I first heard about eyelash serums, like rapidlash and revitalash through r/MUA. One big issue…. they were all around ~$50, not something I’d drop easily for a potential repeat purchase. Come half a year ago, I discovered the DHC Eyelash Tonic on Testerkorea.

From DHC’s official website:

Conditioning DHC Eyelash Tonic nourishing gel treatment strengthens for lush, fuller-looking eyelashes. Fortifying botanicals coat each lash from root to tip to help prevent breakage for a more robust lash line. Wear under mascara during the day and all by itself at bedtime.

  • Specially designed applicator helps distribute gel more evenly
  • Rich in botanicals, including ginseng, aloe and Swertia japonica extract

I first purchased the product for about 14,000KRW (~SGD$19-$20) on Testerkorea, but have since been able to purchase this in Taipei for about SGD$13.50 / ~300NT. I highly suggest against buying this directly from Watsons – this retails for SGD$27.50 in Singapore’s Watsons!

I have two tubes pictured above: 1 has been in use since September 2014 (~6 months of use), and the bottle below is brand new. I’d assume each tube lasts around 1 year, if used once a day – but I would not recommend using an eye product for a year. Mascara rules state that tubes should be thrown out once a month – so you can make your judgement from there. Also, one slight con you might be able to notice – the older bottle has gotten slightly murky from usage over time.

The applicator is extremely easy to use! It’s like any other mascara wand: sweep the tonic over your lashes, covering them in an even coat of tonic. According to DHC,

Use as a mascara base in the morning and as a conditioner in the evening. Gently and evenly, brush a small amount of tonic onto lash roots and sweep outward towards tips.

It’s recommended you use it twice a day, under your daily makeup, and at night to sleep, but I’ve preferred to leave this out under mascara. I like applying a thicker coat of tonic on my lashes, and I feel like the tonic doesn’t fare too well underneath mascara, especially in this humid weather – so I’ve only applied it once a day at night! This comes as the very last step of my routine, after applying eye cream (if at all).

Each bottle contains 6.5ml of product, and is made in Japan. I’ve always liked DHC products – when I was much younger, I loved their acne products (pew pew and my pimples were gone!), and a couple of years ago, I fell in love with their Deep Cleansing Oil. After I started using this for about a month, I discovered this was HG material. Why? Look at my lashes!!!

compare-2

THEY HAVE GROWN SO MUCH :’) There’s a noticeable growth in the length of my lashes, such that they’ve even started to hold a natural curl. Not only so, there’s been an increase in the sheer growth of the lashes – there are new baby lashes growing out, and the original lashes have much thicker roots.

I’ve also applied this to my lower lashes, so there has been an increase in amount of my lower lashes – which is absolutely amazing, because previously I’d had like, no. lower. lashes. This stuff is absolutely amazing.

IMG_4686

Here are the ingredients, in case you might be interested:

water/aqua/eau, butylene glycol, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, phenoxyethanol, carbomer, aminomethyl propanol, placental protein, xanthan gum, allantoin, swertia japonica extract, salix alba (willow) bark extract, symphytum officinale leaf extract, nasturtium officinale flower/leaf extract, olea europaea (olive) leaf extract, panax ginseng root extract

The formulation is gentle on my eyes, and doesn’t leave any stinging sensation or whatnot (of course, if you don’t get it into your eyes.) I’ve used this without issue for the past half a year or so, and am extremely satisfied with the results! However, I think it should also be noted that YMMV. I’ve read a couple of articles in HerWorld about how some other lash serums were better, but I’ve already found my HG – so I probably won’t be trying anything else for now.

ION Orchard: Beauty Season + Her World’s 55th Anniversary Promo

Rushed this post out today after I got home from Orchard!!! This has probably got to be some kind of record – I don’t think I’ve started on a post and published it within such a short amount of time before.

ION Orchard is hosting Beauty Season from now til 4th March 2015! This means that participating stores will be giving away a limited number of samples (every day). This is a great chance for everyone to sample the products they’ve been eyeing!

For the sake of reviewing products for this blog, I’ve set myself on a task to…. review EVERYTHING. Let me preface this – I am not encouraging hoarding products that you won’t use. All of these are brands that I (or my family) am familiar with, and am interested in trying out.

IMG_4828LOOK AT THIS.

To participate in Beauty Season, just log on to beauty.ionorchard.com/home on your mobile, and register with your details. From there, you’ll be able to redeem your samples at each of the stores – obviously limited to one set per person!

2015-02-27 09.03.24

Select the brand that you’re interested in sampling (the images show the product you’ll be sampling), and head towards the store. The page will include the store’s location, and the exact details of the product you’ll be sampling (size/sachet etc.).

If you’re worried about unfriendly salespeople, DON’T BE WORRIED. Just suck it up and head into the stores and show them your screen, swipe to redeem your product, and they’ll hand you the sample once you fill in some details. Maybe it’s just luck (?) but every single one of the salespeople I encountered today were super friendly! In fact, most of them gave me a runthrough of how their product sample works, what it targets, and how long it will last. Super satisfying experience!

2015-02-27 09.03.36

Once you have received the brand’s sample, you’re able to add a review. Adding a review and showing it to the staff will provide a discount in-store, with the exception of Sephora and Estee Lauder. Not only so, you stand a chance to win a full-sized version of the product sampled!! Ok it’s one winner per brand but you still definitely stand a chance haha 😀

Astalift

Astalift was extremely generous with their samples. I’m excited to try this out, as Lunamer is a new line targeted at younger women (Astalift, if you don’t already know, is well-known for their anti-aging products).

What they’re giving away: 100 sets of Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet (1ml) and Rouge Dior Brilliant sample kit

Very excited to try both!! I love trying new lip products, and since I don’t have a signature scent yet… I heard Dior’s scents are pretty good 🙂

What they’re giving away: 100 sets of 1-week trial packs of Aqua-Collagen-Gel Super Moisture EX (1.5g/sachet)

Pictured: When you head to their store, they will invite you to like their Facebook page as well. Go ahead and do so – they’ll provide another sample kit as well, which includes an Enrich Moisture Lotion, Herbal Gel O2 Charge, and Mild UV Lotion sachets.

I have heard of their brand before, and since the latter products are targeted at sensitive skin, I can try it out on breakout days 🙂 The saleslady said that the lotion is meant for anti-aging, so my mum would probably benefit from it more than I would.

The saleslady here was extremely helpful and friendly 🙂

Estee Lauder

What they’re giving away: 100 sets of 1-week trial pack of Crescent White Full Cycle Brightening Spot Correcting Essence (4ml/sachet) (i.e. bottle) daily

Definitely giving this to my mum 😡 She picked up the sample, and was like “isn’t this more like for me??”

Kiehl’s

What they’re giving away: 50 sets of 1 week trial samples of NEW Dermatologist Solutions Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Perfector SPF30 Daily

Pictured: The saleslady gave me some samples for their other products as well! This included the Purifying Foaming Cleanser, Ultra-Facial Oil-Free Toner, Clearly Corrective White Hydrating Moisture Emulsion, as well as the Actively Correcting and Beautifying BB Cream.

I’m especially excited to sample the dark-circle perfector – the saleslady said this sample should last me a week. I’m always up for trying new things to minimise my horrific panda eyes!!

The saleslady was extremely helpful and friendly 🙂

Laneige

IMG_4820

What they’re giving away: 100 sets of 7-day sample kit of White Plus Renew Original Cream (1ml/sachet)

Stepped into Laneige to check out the Multiberry Yoghurt Pack (i.e. wanted to let mum smell it.) Saw the promo for the first time :’) Laneige is a mid-high end skincare brand, so anything’s fair game for me. I recently purchased some of their anti-aging samples in Bonjour Hong Kong.

Mt. Sapola

IMG_4815

What they’re giving away: 100 samples of Body Lotion, Lemongrass (18ml)

Will use this soon 🙂 I’m not a regular user of body lotion, but my calves are especially dry and could do with some moisturizing. Mum recommended this brand.

The saleslady was extremely helpful and friendly 🙂

Next

IMG_4818

What they’re giving away: 100 bottles of Next Hair Building Fibres (25g)

I… think this is hair roots mascara in powder form. Reminds me of Ji Sukjin and his hair powder stain on the ceiling keyboard :D. Extremely surprised at the size of this – this looks like a full-sized product already! Mum was very excited to receive this 🙂 (obviously it will not be very useful for me. whoops)

The saleslady was extremely helpful and friendly 🙂

Sephora

IMG_4809

What they’re giving away: 150 pieces of mini Colorful Eyeshadow Mono from Sephora Collection

Pictured: ~ in Mirror, a shimmery gold.

I also received a 2-piece trial set from Dior, including Capture Totale Serum and Dream Skin – these are NOT part of ION Beauty Season, but a perk from being a Sephora Black Card Member!

The saleslady was extremely helpful and friendly 🙂

Shu Uemura

IMG_4805

What they’re giving away: 100 sets of 7-day samples of Blanc:Chroma brightening and polishing gentle cleansing oil (4ml)

SUPER excited to use this – I think I’m the most excited to use this out of all of the samples received today. I love using cleansing oil – it’s much milder on my skin as compared to furiously rubbing my mascara off with makeup remover. Shu’s is supposedly the best in the market, and I’m excited to see how it compared to my DHC Deep Cleansing Oil.

The salesman was extremely helpful and friendly 🙂

Skin Inc

IMG_4814

What they’re giving away: 100 bottles of Skin Inc’s encapsulated Serum (5ml) daily

Pictured: Vitamin A Serum (5ml)

You get to pick a serum of your choice (i.e. Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramide, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Collagen, Q1o etc.)! I’ve already tried the Q10 and it was not bad, so I picked Vitamin A to help with brightening of dark spots and whatnot. I’m already familiar with Skin Inc and quite like their products 🙂

YSL

Also, obviously I will be reviewing the above products in time. So many posts queued right now ><

Sample Queen – Part II

I received so many samples from Curél, so I thought they deserved yet another post of their own. Curél Singapore will actually send you samples if you’re interested in trying out their products. I tried two links: here’s one, and here’s the other.

Curél, Japan’s No.1 Brand for Sensitive Asian Skin is formulated from Kao’s extensive dermatological science research. From face and body to scalp and hair, Curél’s hydrating and moisture-retaining ceramide care targets the actual causes of sensitive Asian skin and provides highly effective solutions to improve skin condition.

My mum first introduced me to Curél a few years ago, when she purchased a trial kit (which includes the Foaming Wash, Makeup Cleansing Gel, Moisture Face Milk, and Moisture Lotion II; the larger-sized items pictured above). Admittedly, I wasn’t really into skincare when I was 16 – I never touched the Moisture Face Milk or Moisture Lotion! Although I still have them, they’re probably headed to the trash now :/

What I did like was their Makeup Cleansing Gel, and the Foaming Wash. The Makeup Cleansing Gel is packaged in a squeeze-out tube, and it comes out as a clear, sticky gel. It is amazing at getting eye makeup off; usually, water based removers don’t do a lot for my eye makeup. I just end up with a smokey eye from all the remaining eyeliner/mascara. Oil-based removers? Nooooope! Those get in my eyes (or even my contacts) and leave me with blurry vision for ages! But this… this Makeup Cleansing Gel gets every bit of makeup off my face without leaving me uncomfortable. While it is amazing, it’s not HG level as micellar cleansing water is for me.

Makeup Cleansing Gel: 4half

As for the Foaming Wash, I was in need of a new face wash after breaking up with Biore at the start of 2014. I purchased a full-sized 150ml bottle of it (mum had already finished the mini-sized 90ml one and recommended it!) and it’s lasted me almost the whole year! It thoroughly cleanses my face every day, but one issue I have with it is that I developed dry skin this year; foaming face washes are not that suitable for dry skin types. While my face feels clean after cleansing, it feels a little bit tight.

Foaming Wash: ★★★★☆ (for dry combi skin types)

Sebum Care Trial Kit

What’s included:

  • Curel Sebum Care Moisture Gel (7ml)
  • Curel Sebum Care Lotion (8ml)

About 3 days after I sent in my request, I received the Sebum Care set in the mail. They were really quite generous (most samples come in foil sachets – I don’t like foil sachets) – 2 products were provided! I used them on a particularly oily day – first impression: effective! My T-zone was definitely less oily than without using the lotion and gel. I keep the gel with me in my makeup pouch, and it’s been an absolute lifesaver in dry skin emergencies!

First impression: ★★★★☆

Then… 2 weeks later, I checked the mailbox and I’d received the second sample set from them!

Face Sample Pack

What’s included:

  1. Curél Makeup Cleansing Gel (6g)
  2. Curél Intensive Moisture Cream (4g)
  3. Curél Moisture Eye Zone Essence (2.6g)
  4. Curél Moisture Lotion III Enrich (8ml)
  5. Curél Moisture Lotion II (8ml)
  6. Curél Moisture Face Milk (8ml)

That’s 6 products for me to try!

I’ve been interested in finding the right eye cream/essence to help with my panda eyes, so sampling Curél’s is a must-do for now! Also, one thing I noticed – there are two different kinds of lotions, II and III Enrich. Basically, the only difference is that:

Contains Eucalyptus extract that penetrates deeply into the stratum corneum so skin becomes smooth, fully moisturized and resistant to external irritation. Helps to improve your skin’s natural barrier function, soothe and protect skin from dryness. Leaves a rich moist/thoroughly moist feel. Suitable for very dry skin.

First impression: ★★★★☆

After trying their products, it’s quite clear that their products aren’t gimmicky or anything – their products are effective due to the ceramide in them. From Curél:

“Ceramides are natural lipids and are a major component in surface skin structure. They serve as part of the “glue” that holds surface skin cells together. Dry, irritated, and sensitive skin often lacks ceramides. As a result, skin’s protective barrier is compromised and becomes more susceptible to environmental factors, changes of season, and other irritants.”

While it is true that Ceramide is an effective moisturizer, I’ve read that the skin lacks Ceramide in winter, and hence is more effective in winter weather, while Hyaluronic Acid is more effective in the summer? I will do some research on this soon.

Curél’s products are extremely gentle, and suitable for sensitive skin – so I’ve been recommending it to all my friends with sensitive skin 🙂 However, I’ve got pretty hardy skin, and am hunting for stronger products – for now, I’ll probably look elsewhere for acids instead! (although I must admit, I am re-considering re-purchasing the foaming facial wash after the Hada Labo was a mild disappointment. will update soon)
